Aztec Astrology & the Calli Cycle: A Time of Transformation (2013–2026)

2025: The 13th Year of the House

In ancient Aztec cosmology, time did not flow linearly; it moved in cycles. One such sacred cycle, the Xiuhmolpilli, or “binding of the years,” spanned 52 years and consisted of four 13-year periods.

Each period had a specific cardinal direction that governed it, and each direction linked to a particular symbol:

• West: Calli (House)
• South: Tochtli (Rabbit)
• East: Acatl (Reed)
• North: Tecpatl (Flint/Knife)

Each direction and sign ruled for 13 years, rotating in a continuous cosmic rhythm. These cycles were deeply tied to agricultural, spiritual, and communal life.

While sources vary on the exact date of the Mexica New Year—some placing it on February 13, others March 13, and still others aligning it with the spring equinox—this year, the solar New Year occurred on March 20, 2025, around 3:00 AM in Mexico (according to INAOE, the National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics, and Electronics).

We Are Living in a Time of the House

Right now, we are living within a powerful 13-year cycle ruled by Calli, the House, which began in March 2013 and will complete in March 2026.

This cycle brings deep, foundational change—a time when structures, both inner and outer, undergo dismantling and rebuilding.

Calli governs the West, the direction known as Cihuatlampa—“the course of the women.” In Aztec tradition, this realm belonged to the Cihuateteo, the spirits of women who died in childbirth and earned the warrior’s rank.

People believed that warriors who died in battle journeyed westward, and together, these spirits empowered the Sun’s perilous journey through Mictlán, the underworld.

The Lord of the West: Xipe Totec

In Aztec Astrology, Xipe Totec, “the Flayed One,” rules this era—a deity of transformation, fire, and winter. Xipe Totec symbolizes the shedding of old skin—of ego, illusion, and attachment—so that rebirth can occur.

His energy brings painful transitions if resisted, and graceful ones if embraced. His presence teaches us that change is as inevitable as time itself.

Calli also represents the head, the place of analysis and thought, but also the womb, the creative matrix from which new life is born.

It aligns with Tepeyolotli, the Heart of the Mountain, a fierce and wild protective spirit who guards the natural world.

Tepeyolotli is a feminine manifestation of Tezcatlipoca, Mother Earth in her primal force—both creator and destroyer.

Fire Below and Fire Within

Calli is further connected with Huehueteotl, the ancient god of fire. This tells us that we are in a period of intensified volcanic, seismic, and internal fire activity.

The earth is speaking—and so are we. This cycle demands an ecological awakening, a return to feminine wisdom, and a fierce maternal protection of life and justice.

In 2025, we enter the 13th and final year of the current Calli cycle.

The number 13 is sacred in Mexica cosmology—it corresponds to the 13 heavens, and represents culmination, mastery, and transformation.

It is the number of the master teacher and the completion of a sacred cycle.

This year is a turning point.

We may see systems, governments, institutions, and beliefs collapse or transform—not as destruction, but as part of a great reckoning.

On both personal and planetary levels, structures may shake, including homes, relationships, jobs, and identities. Change may come by choice or by circumstance—but it will come.

Listening to the Heart of the Mountain

This is the time to walk your own wild mountain path. To reach the still center within and listen deeply—to your intuition, to the earth, to your own heart.

That inner voice, echoed in every being, is the voice of Mother Earth calling us to co-create new systems, new dreams, and new ways of being.

As the final Calli year unfolds, the house will be opened. Everything hidden will rise. What cannot stand will fall. What is true will be revealed. And in this revelation, we will be given a choice:

To resist and suffer—or to surrender and rise renewed.
